Introduction of Planet Barcode Font
The United States Postal Service (USPS) created a linear barcode called PLANET (Postal Alpha Numeric Encoding Technique) to automatically identify, categorize, and monitor mail packets or letters. On January 28, 2013, the USPS Intelligent Mail barcode (IMb) has taken the place of PLANET barcodes. Other names for the PLANET barcode are USPS PLANET barcode and USPS confirm service barcode.
USPS implements this barcode symbology to confirm mail delivery services. There is information is provided by the USPS's confirming service, which includes the origin confirm (arriving reply mail sent back by consumers) and the destination confirm (departing mails going to consumers).
Format
The PLANET Code is a "two-state" barcode that is 12 or 14 digits long. In these barcodes, data is encoded in half- and full-height bars and it always began and finished with a single long "framing bar". A set of five bars (three tall and two short bars) with a two-out-of-five code is used to represent each unique digit. All of the bars and spaces are the same width. A check-sum digit or correction character is present in every PLANET Code. This digit should always be a single digit (0–9) that, when added to the total of the other digits in the barcode, produces a whole number that is a multiple of 10.
